Glacier d'Armancette, Domes de Miage

The Domes de Miage has to be high on any european ski mountaineers hit list. Always an adventure and with epic terrain to get inspired for.

Access is more traditional than most european ski mountaineering objectives meaning there aren't really any ways to get mechanical uplift to get to the huts. That being said if you are going there early in the ski touring season you could use the lift system in les contamines to get a ways into the valley and approach the Tre la Tête Refuge or probably more likely the Conscrits Refuge via a short tour over the Col de la Fenêtre. It would provide more of an interesting approach than walking up through the forest in many ways but it might not be that much more efficient in the end.

The next question that should be address is Conscrits or Tre la Tête Refuge. There are pros and cons of each. The Tre la Tête is my favoured refuge as it's more cozy and means you can cross the mauvais pas early in the morning, however it makes the 2nd day considerably longer. This is the reason why most folks will use the Conscrits Refuge for this tour. This makes the 2nd day a lot more reasonable but I would say that the 1st day to the hut is not to be underestimated. An early start from the parking is recommended especially if there has been some fresh snow in the previous few days. The reason? The cliffs above the mauvais pas often shed snow, rock and ice and being there in the full afternoon sun is not ideal. Leaving the car park early means you can drop down onto the glacier before things warm up too much.

If you don't mind the long 2nd day or you are pressed for time on the first day and you also don't mind doing the mauvais pas in the dark then staying at the Tre la Tête is a nicer options (better food, lower down and quieter so easier to sleep!).

It's sometimes possible to negotiate the mauvais pas by keeping the skis on with a short side step but quite often you'll have to walk and likely with crampons. Some guides might even short rope that section in certain conditions. Once you are down on the glacier there is little difficulty until you get to the Col de Domes. Don't underestimate how long it is up to there though! It keeps going!

From the col a short and super aesthetic snow ridge (one of the best in the Alps in my humble opinion!) leads you onto the western summit Dome. The true summit of the Domes de Miage is an out and back in the opposite direction (to the east) on another knife edge ridge and therefore most people don't go to it when skiing.

The ski down is constantly interesting and engaging but also not without its risks. The major accident that took place in 2023 really shook up the local guide community with many guides swearing off the route after it happened. Good stability and cool temps help mitigate the risks but ultimately you are skiing down a wide open steep slope with lots of exposure below. It's highly recommended you start skiing before 11am to give yourself enough time to get down before things are getting too warm.

Skiing here with poor visibility would not be ideal as there are plenty of twist and turns along the way. When I've done the descent there has always been a section of walking through the forest where the slopes turn due south around 1850m. You can often ski down a ways after that and then walk and ski the final sections down to the village.

For me despite the risks (most anything in the mountains has some sort of risk involved) this descent and the journey as a whole is one of the best in the Alps. Stunning scenery, excellent terrain and a superb descent make this one of top classics in the Alps and Europe and it should be on your bucket list.
